Here are some sketches that invove references and quotes of famous art works.
Mondrian
This painting by Mondrian ("Composition with Red, Yellow and Blue") calls out for variations that subvert the original intent. Some are vaguely influenced by other artists (Morris Louis, Delauney, Leger) and some are just distortions for the fun of it. Here the original:

How Paintings Happen
I recently found a book in the library, called "How Paintings Happen". Published in the 50's, it has some great quotes about art, which I plan to use as the basis for a series of paintings. Here are some preliminary prototypes.
For this first one, I noticed that Duchamp's urinal and Mona Lisa fit on top of each other nicely! The quote from "How Paintings Happen" is "Pictures are complete within themselves -- they need no explanatory titles of any kind"
For this next one the relevant quote is "The only rules in art are that art cannot be defined and that all rules can be broken". The rule I have chosen to break is one of Barnett Newman's.
The next quote is self explanatory: |
